Behind the Dance: Pattycake Polka and Children

Posted on November 27, 2014 at 9:30 PM Comments comments (0)

On November 24 and 25 I was blessed with teaching and leading dance to about 650 elementary students at Barrington Elementary in Upper Arlington Schools. The physical education and music teachers worked together to schedule classes in grades 1-5 in 12 different sessions over the two days.

It was a learning experience for me to teach and lead dance for this age without their families present. I was quite appreciative of the teachers giving me a few tips along the way about adjusting the dances especially for children in grades one and two.

Dances included Lancaster Barn Dance, Pattycake Polka, Grand March, Swingin, King Tut, Seven Jumps, and Klapptanz. Dance formations included circle, line, and scattered.  Contact me if I can help you with a dance program for elementary age children. Enjoy the video of people dancing Pattycake Polka.

Behind the Dance: Benny Hill, Boots Randolph and Yakety Sax

Posted on November 20, 2014 at 8:25 AM Comments comments (0)

On November 8, 2014, I called a square dance and led some line and round dancing for a church social gathering in a barn near South Charleston, Ohio. We had up to five squares dancing with all ages present. I especially appreciated the enthusiasm of the high school and young adult dancers.

Being in this area brings back memories of a summer 1982 internship I served with the Landmark Seed Plant. That summer included spending a lot of time hanging out with a friend I made at a Farm Bureau Youth conference in 1981. Later that decade, I was in this friend's wedding. As time rolled on, we just didn't stay in touch with each other much.

It so happens the 20 year old son of that friend attended this dance.  I gave him some background of my friendship with his dad. During that conversation I recalled a vacation we took together to Nashville.

One of the stops on that Nashville vacation was Boots Randolph's club located in Printer's Alley. It was a great dinner/music show. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing Boots play his famous song "Yakety Sax." You may recall that song as Benny Hill's theme song and the music that accompanied the chase scenes on his show.

I recall a fun little line dance to Yakety Sax that I plan to put back into my dances. Contact me if you would like me to teach the Yakety Sax line dance at an event you are hosting. In the meantime, enjoy this performance of Yakety Sax by Boots Randolph, Chet Atkins and Ray Stevens.

Behind the Dance: Jesse Polka and Darwin Bryan

Posted on November 9, 2014 at 6:00 PM Comments comments (0)

In late September 2014, I called a community square dance near Wapakoneta, Ohio. It started off with a great potluck meal. It was held in a new barn and the concrete had just been poured earlier that week.

There was a great turnout that included over 3 hours of dancing time with the group. I learned part way through there was a couple there for whom I called square dances at their wedding reception 11 years ago near Wilmington, Ohio. What a great surprise!

At the end of the dance a sweet senior lady came up and asked about my comment earlier in the dance. I shared that I first started square dancing at a Farm Bureau youth conference in Bluffton, Ohio in the late 1970s. She told me she attended a youth conference there in the 1950s and learned dancing from Darwin Bryan. Darwin was the first youth director of the Ohio Farm Bureau and started there in 1937. Much of my dancing approach is in line with his heritage and was taught to me by Shirley Boyd, his successor as Ohio Farm Bureau's youth director.

I told with this lady that I knew Darwin, learned some dances from him and that he allowed me to lead dancing in my early dance leading years at Friendship Village where he resided with his wife Helen. The lady then started a little dance step I recognized as the Jesse Polka. I put the music on for her to dance to and she had the biggest smile on her face. What a delight!

Below you may listen to that song. Contact me if you would like me teach this dance at an event you are hosting. I teach this as a couple dance and can use it as a mixer. It's a fun tune to dance to.

Special Occasion Dance: German Exchange Program Celebration

Posted on May 7, 2014 at 4:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Many dances I call/lead are part of a special occasion. On May 6, 2014, I was privileged to help Grove City High School celebrate 30 years of its high school German Exchange program with Max Planck Gymnasium in Heidenheim, Germany. It was also the welcome party for the German students visiting in this year's program. Over 100 people including students, parents, school officials, and various elected officials paricpated in the event.

We enjoyed a meal and danced in Eagle Pavilion at Rotary Lake in Fryer Park in Grove City, Ohio. We square danced, line danced, did a couple of country line dances and circle mixer dances along with some hip hop line dances.

Please contact me to discuss how Fun Dancing with John Wargowsky can make your occasion more special.
