We can be intentional in our efforts to positvely impact others. Looking for and sharing observations of such positive efforts will cause me and hopefully others to be more intentional in this way.

Each Dancer Has A Story

Posted on August 4, 2011 at 11:49 AM Comments comments (0)

It has been a privilege over the last 30 years to lead hundreds of dances and thousands of dancers to a fun time and enjoying the company of other dancers. I've learned through the years that each dancer has a story. Some people have loved dancing for years, some dance reluctantly, some meet their spouse to be at a dance, and some learn to dance for the first time at one of my dances. Some are able to really hear the music well enough for the first time to fully experience dancing.

The last two years, I've had the honor of leading square, round and line dancing at the Thurston Family Reunion in Delaware County, Ohio. I knew going into the 2010 reunion that one of the family members, Laurie Pullins,  would be square dancing for the first time after having cochlear implants. I enjoyed talking to Laurie before the dance and discovered this family reunion was the first time she was hearing the voices of many family members. Laurie shared with me at the 2011 family reunion that she had recently written a blog article, This Is Why I Dance..., at her blog site, Dance With Sound. I encourage you to read this post and learn more about Laurie and her journey. It's an inspirational story.

This makes me wonder how many more stories can I discover on the dance floor. I look forward to sharing more of these stories with you.

Take a moment to share your story about dancing in the comments below. You can learn about my dancing story here.

Dancing with 4-H Youth

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 2:51 PM Comments comments (0)

The Collegiate 4-H at The Ohio State University asked me to call square dances and lead line and round dances at their annual Plowboy Prom on March 12, 2011. It was held at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center at the Ohio State University Columbus Campus. I shared the stage with Ryan Edgington, a Collegiate 4-H member who also operates as a DJ.

This is an annual dance that is nearing 40 years of history. Collegiate 4-Hers invite 4-H youth, advisers, alumni and others interested in dancing. Over 210 attended this year's event. The enthusiasm to dance, learn dances and meet new people was obvious at the event.

I talked to one married couple from Miami County who met at the Plowboy Prom years ago. Their children were experiencing the event for the first time and having a blast. Annual events such as this give people a chance to reconnect with old friends.

I've called numerous dances at 4-H camps and events through the years. I thoroughly enjoyed the people and the dancing at the 2011 Plowboy Prom.I take my hat off to the planning committee of Collegiate 4-H at OSU for hosting another succesful Plowboy Prom.

What's your favorite memory of dancing at a youth or annual dance?

Dancing for Children

Posted on February 26, 2011 at 11:07 AM Comments comments (0)

On February 18, I had the privilege of being part of MetroThon 2011, a six-hour dance marathon designed to benefit Nationwide Children's Hospital and the children it serves. The event was hosted by Metro Early College High School inpartnership with BuckeyeThon, Ohio State University's student philanthropy organization.

The DJ for the evening was Adnane Rhazzal, also know as "DJ Sho” and a former Metro student. He did a great job playing dance music throughout the evening that was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. My part of the program was teaching and calling square dances along with a couple of round mixer dances for 45 minutes.

Other activities for the evening included dodgeball, karaoke, double dutch rope jumping, quilting, eating and learning a line dance that everyone performed toward theend of the evening. The students were enthusiastic, positive and committed to raise funds to “stand up” for children who can not stand up for themselves. The students did not sit down until the end of the evening after learning they surpassed their fundraising goal of $10,000 by bringing in over $14,600. A mother and her young son told a compelling story of how they benefitted tremendously from programs and services at Nationwide Children's Hospital. People may still donate at this Children's Miracle Network site.

Way to go Metro students and everyone who contributed to the success of the event!

Square Dancing with Seniors

I was blessed to call square dances at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors on February 4, 2011. Pete Shew with the Back Porch Swing Band asked me to be their caller for the evening. I was quite impressed with the center and it is obviously a focal point of numerous positive and engaging programs for seniors in the area.

A crowd of about 90 people attended with as many as eight squares dancing at a time. Everyone arrived with smiles on their faces and looking forward to visiting with friends they enjoy spending time with.

This group knows how to square dance so little time was needed for instruction. Throughout the night we had two square dances and then the band played three other songs for partner dancing and line dancing. I met many nice people in between calling the square dances.

Many senior centers have dances and social activities in communities throughout Ohio. Consider attending one of these events even if you are not a senior. You'll meet some great people.

I'd love to hear about dances hosted by senior centers in your community. Feel free to share below.

Dancing at the American Legion Hall in Cardington, Ohio

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 2:27 PM Comments comments (0)

I enjoy going to new regularly occurring square, round and line dances to 1) meet new people, 2) learn new dances and 3) learn the “culture” of how that group conducts a dance. I traveled a short distance up the road to the American Legion Hall in Cardington, Ohio on the evening of January 22 and successfully achieved all three.

The American Legion in Cardington hosts dances the fourth Saturday evening, October to April. They start at 7:30 and end at 11:00. The doors open at 6:30 and dancing starts at 7:30. You can enjoy beverages, sandwiches, salads, homemade pies, soups and snacks throughout the evening. The admission cost is $8.00 for adults, 13 to 17 is $3.00, 12 and under is free.

Mad River was the band performing live music. You will enjoy country music for couple dancing, slow songs and square dancing. Roger Cole was the caller. Most people there know the basics of square dancing and are willing to help people with less experience. I always suggest beginning dancers let the caller know they might need a little extra help. Roger called some squares that I had not danced before and they were fun to learn. You can expect two squares at a time.

Roger and Nancy Wren with Dance Country DJ Service taught line and round dances when the Mad River Band took breaks. They took ample time teaching to make sure you would enjoy dancing once the music started.

The environment was friendly and relaxed. People were available to help others learn dancing. You would feel welcome as a visitor and remembered as a returning dancer. I will return when my schedule permits.

If you would like receive a monthly list of dances similar to this in Ohio, become a member of the Square, Round and Line Dancing in Ohio community for free or 'like' my Fun Dancing With John Wargowsky page on Facebook.

There is a great round dance (no partners) to this 1960's hit by Miriam Makeba. It is called Pata Pata. The dance also goes well to Conga by Gloria Estefan, although at a faster pace.

Who still square dances?

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 8:04 PM Comments comments (0)

I have been networking with a lot of people this year. Part of the conversation always includes what I do professionally. When I tell people I have a part-time business of calling square dances and leading line and round dances, it leads to questions and comments such as...

  • Who still square dances?
  • Where do you have these dances?
  • I haven't square danced since gym class in school.
  • I can't dance.

I thought some people would benefit from seeing a list of the dances I called/lead in the year 2010. Over 2,000 people danced with me and many of them danced for the first time or hadn't square danced since gym in school. The ages of dancers ranged from elementary to senior citizens. I always take time to teach when we have begininning dancers. It was a great privilege to experience special occasions with so many people this past year. So here is the list of dances and types of facilities.

  • 4-H club/home school group - church
  • Home school group dance - church
  • High school graduation party - church
  • Church family outing - barn
  • 4-H camp - Kellys Island 4-H camp facility
  • Barn dedication
  • High school music theater camp - Muskingum University
  • Community dance and fundraiser for 4-H Camp Palmer - Fulton County Fairgrounds
  • Birthday party for an academic professional - local restaurant
  • Church camp outing - commercial campground in the grass
  • Family reunion - township hall
  • Teacher recognition - church
  • Corporate employee/family outing - state park facility
  • Hamilton County Jr Fair - fairgrounds
  • Henry County Fair - fairgrounds
  • Engagement party - barn
  • Montgomery County Fair - fairgrounds
  • County Farm Bureau Youth - township hall
  • Annual hog roast for family, friends & business associate - paved driveway at the home
  • Family/community party - yard/wooded area outside the home
  • Church/Young Adult Retreat - church campground/retreat center
  • Girl Scouts (elementary age) - local school
  • Church social/relationship building event - church
  • Fundraiser for Medical Center in Cambodia - mow of a horse barn
  • Wedding reception - a lodge facility

So.... You can dance and dances may be held in a variety of venues. If you would like help organizing a dance, please contact me.

I thought you might an enjoy a video to the song "I Can Dance" by Leo Sayer. Dancing is all about having fun with other people.
