Over the past nearly 40 years I have interacted with many people, young and old, who enjoy hoedown (traditional) square dancing and line and round dancing. I first experienced line dancing in the early 1970s at 4-H Camp Ohio near Utica. In 1977, I first experienced square and round dancing at an Ohio Farm Bureau Youth Conference in Bluffton, OH. In 1981, I decided to start calling square dances and leading simple line and round dances.
Nearly 30 years later, I have come to appreciate people and organizations that hold hoedown square dances that may also include round and line dancing. I’ve been fortunate to lead hundreds of dance programs in that time and dance at many others. For the last year, a new passion of mine is building a community of those interested in hoedown square dancing and round and line dancing.
The Square, Round and Line Dancing in Ohio group on Facebook was started in February 2009 as a forum for interested people to share dance opportunities and learn where these dances are being held so they can participate. We send a monthly message through Facebook to group members to announce dance opportunities and post those same opportunities on the group wall. We also send a handfull of additional messages some months.
Group members can post dance opportunities on the wall, e-mail me or send me messages through Facebook. Some typical dances we currently list are at Malabar Farm (Perrysville), Carriage Hill MetroPark Farm (HuberHeights), Cardington (Morrow County), Martinsburg (Knox County), Grafton (Lorain County) and numerous other dances that may be held annually or for special occasions.
This group recently surpassed 100 members. Anyone who wants to learn where these dances are held or help us identify more dances is encouraged to join the group. If you are a hoedown square dance caller or leader of non-club type round and line dances, feel free to contact me also. We want to know about regularly occurring dances and special occasion dances.
We have numerous square, round and line dances throughout Ohio that deserve more publicity and dancers. Help me spread the word about Square, Round & Line Dancing in Ohio group on Facebook se we can spread the word about these dances!
